US Army Institute of Surgical Research’s Battlefield Tourniquet Recommendations [28/07/2004].

Background:
Due to product demand, 9 battlefield CAT – Haemostatic Tourniquet systems were offered to the US Army Institute of Surgical Research for testing. Of these, 7 were commercially available and 2 were prototypes. Eighteen subjects were used to test the efficacy of each product in accordance with IRB protocol. Success was based on the ability to stop arterial blood flow in the proximal thigh (elimination of the Doppler pulse in the posterior tibial artery). In addition, the subjects voted for the product they tried using a visual analogue pain scale.

Results:
The CAT – Haemostatic Tourniquet stopped arterial blood flow in both upper and lower extremities 100% quickly and effectively in all trials.

In the pain voting results (compression and circumferential), C-A-T was significantly ahead of all other sling-style products. “[Based on the results of the Institute for Surgical Research’s testing] C-A-T is recommended for every soldier in the US military.

“Tests of Conflict Area Tourniquets” Dr Thomas Walters, US Military Institute of Surgical Research, presented at the 2004 Conference on Advanced Technological Applications in Conflict Area Treatments, published in the Conference book, 16-18 August 2004, St. Petersburg, FL Memorandum Distributed to US Forces on 28 July 2004: What is the best conflict area tourniquet? The CAT – Haemostatic Tourniquet (NSN: 6515-01-521-7976) is the best.

In light of these results, CAT – Haemostatic Tourniquet is recommended for every soldier and EMTs are provided to battlefield doctors. In addition, EMTs are provided to all medical transport vehicles and to all threshold I-III medical facilities.
